Why we need International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day was born on 8th March 8 1908, when 15,000 women marched through the streets of New York City to demand shorter hours, better pay, and the right to vote. The UN officially recognised it in 1975. Now 27 countries actually mark IWD as a national holiday.

But the latest Global Gender Gap Report from the World Economic Forum estimates that we are still 100 years away from gender equality, based on the current rate of progress. and According to the World Economic Forum.

“IWD acts as a vital reminder of the gender inequalities that exist all around us,” says Helen Cowan, Founder of The Tall Wall. “Awareness of these issues is the first step to change, which is why it’s important to keep looking, talking and taking action to ensure talent of both genders thrive.”

“IWD  is an important opportunity to celebrate the incredible women who came before us, to recognise one another and our achievements, and highlight what more can be done, and encourage positive change,” adds Maison boss Tania Thomas. “I feel very passionate about this; Imagine what could be achieved for our daughters if society stopped objectifying women and celebrated and supported women as equals!”

“IWD gives us the opportunity to review the progress made and promote the changes that are still required to attain equality,” says Oona Collins. “I look forward to the day when leadership is a generic term without referencing gender where everyone thrives together.”
